Yes friends, you read that right. I find TC's scary! To those that don't know what the heck I'm talking about, a TC is a Tetramorium Caespitum or T.caespitum ant otherwise known as Pavement Ant. Why are they scary? I here you ask, well, theres 2 reasons. 1. They are small. Really small, and this means they can fit through some very tiny holes so you have to make sure they are suitably caged. 2. They bite. Now i've not personally been bitten by one of these girls yet, and Im glad of it because its supposed to be very painful. They are such fast breeders, it just astonishes me. If anyone out there is looking for a very active and fast breeding ant, look no further, these gals tick all the right boxes. I check up on the Lasius Niger yesterday, apart from my usual watering. They have been holed up now since the nuptial flights, and have not broken surface in search of food etc yet. I guest its only a matter of time. I can see a number of them now, probably 4 or 5 workers and the queen which is great because there was a time when I thought I would lose them. Whats interesting is that they have only had water to feed from for all of this time. Its incredible to think that the old wing muscles could provide the colony with so much food. The Messor Barbarus are showing signs of waking up a bit. There are over 25 in the colony now, and I have pretty much given up trying to count the buggers. The Camponotus Ligniperda are still mooching around in the tubing, not venturing far or doing much, so theres no point in reporting on them... TTFN and pray that I don't get bitten, and that they don't escape ;) |
